The Joey Factory

I have been absent and I have no excuse. My last blog was on December 1, 2011. I’m sure the masses are complaining, “Why hasn’t Joey written anything?!” Ha ha. Fear not I have returned and blogs shall also return.

I have something called the January Blues. I’m not sure if this is a real thing, but once a year I go through it. Honestly, I get completely depressed and it’s nothing that medication will resolve, just a rut that I go through. It’s funny but in years passed, if I look back, my creativity always comes to a halt. I tend to waste most of my January reflecting and not a lot of time creating. It’s the month where I look at what I’ve done and realize I’m a year older and haven’t accomplished all I wanted to in the year before.

Now the January Blues isn’t a depression over age thing, just a depression over feeling unaccomplished. Once I take the time and look back at all the things I did the year before, I think that’s pretty good, but I can do better this year. With that being said, I think December should be cancelled altogether. Christmas makes me spend too much money and wastes a lot of my energy. I think this year I’d prefer no presents, just time spent together, and a dinner of some sort. And what a perfect segue into New Year’s Resolutions!

I don’t think one should have New Year’s Resolutions, so let’s just call them resolutions. I think you should have a long list of resolutions because some of them will be broken. One thing I’m rather proud of from last year’s list is that I haven’t had a Pepsi (my choice drug) in a year. Here’s my list:

-Lose 30 lbs.
-Stop drinking all soda includes orange and ginger ale
-Exercise 2 times a week
-Make videos every week
-Get 100 more subscribers on YouTube
-Make 2 music videos
-Finish The Shanikwa Shanikwa Movie
-Complete the silhouette silkscreens
-Have a small art gallery showing
-When I scrawl essays onto paper, type them and share them on the blog!
-Keep drinking green tea
-Enter your documentary into the YouTube contest
-Learn to bake my own bread and do it well
-Earn $100 in monetization from Google Adsense (if only, ha ha)
-Make more tutorial videos
-make short films
-start writing more
-Complain less

I haven’t been blogging in a while and I promise that I will not leave this blog ever! I have been creating and what usually happens when I create is that I disappear off the face of digital Earth. I still exist on all the mediums, so don’t worry!

I have been living in my Nuts And Berries music video bubble for the past several months. From casting friends, writing the script, creating a broccoli hat, miniature set, weapons and collaborating for costumes to scheduling the actual day of filming, I’ve been very busy. The video is coming along nicely and I’m fairly impressed with the story it is telling. I’m stuck at a computer for the next month while editing and adding ray gun effects and so on.

I’d like to take this time to thank all of my friends for participating in this video; whether it be in production or in front of the camera, it means the world to me. Special thanks to Danny for all his hard camera work. I’ve watched all the raw footage and I’m expecting a 10 – 15 minute movie when it’s done.

Here are just a few pictures of what to expect from this crazy video coming out in the beginning of October.

In the midst of many projects, but I have returned to you, well seasoned in traveling abroad. London was a phenomenal place to be and live, hopefully I will get to visit again! I have been recuperating from a cold, a healing tattoo touch up, and a really fun weekend. I am ready to get back to work and stay focused on my projects.

MUSIC:

The other day, I composed a little piece of music and I found it to be pretty exciting. I’m not sure what my musical journey is yet, but a song, is certainly on it’s way this year. So far I’ve got a lot of music sitting around on a hard drive and several back up discs, waiting for the light of day. Lyrically, I have to make sure it flows as smooth as the music and because of this there are several drafts. I’m getting closer but sometimes I just get afraid of pushing myself and I know I have to let it go and jump in.

FILM

I’ve always got something up my sleeve when it comes to short films and films. I get in these little bubbles of creativity and all of a sudden I’m on a roll. What happens later on? I get in these little ruts and then, as all bubbles do, gravity catches up with the ground, and… POP! Down with the creativity and enter another unfinished project on some random folder,in my computer, tape, on my camera, or scrap piece of paper.

These ideas really sit around and fester and I’m not sure why I don’t let them see the light. New policy: follow through and let the film see the light. I’m not holding back for fear of criticism, just waiting for who the hell knows what. I think I need to just be more organized in my disorganization. Let the mind run like a mind, but run the outsource of the creation like a library. Maybe even making a creation calendar would help. Anyways, I have to get organized.

ART

If a small gallery of my artwork to consist of one finished piece, then I’m ready to go. I’ve accomplished a small version of which became the inspiration piece and then two large pieces, but it’s not quite done. I’m working on this silhouette silk screening project and so far I’ve got two pieces done. One piece needs to be stretched onto canvas.

The bigger part of the project is to turn the silhouette into a pattern and place it on canvas. I’m going to spend some time making a second silk screen stencil with a repeated pattern. Once I’ve made the second screen it won’t be very long before the canvases start piling up. I haven’t decided how many to make of the larger and how many to make of the pattern, but I’ve got the color palette down. As simple as the silhouettes are, the statement, is to provoke conversation about what is equality.

I’ve been thinking about making t-shirts with the same stencils and maybe give away a few of the shirts at the gallery. Any way to promote my show or our show, still thinking about getting some other artists together, or expanding it larger. We’ll just have to wait and see.

I’m fully aware that Google Me is not a great song. I was fully aware when I created it and the truth is so many people just don’t get it. We as a society think we need to “get it” in order to like something or hate something. Rebecca Black’s song, Friday, is not a great song but we love to judge and we love how ridiculous it is. When you make a bad song on purpose it is a hit or miss. I just wanted to make fun of pop culture, our society, and of my own obsession with vanity and fame. A lot of my friends might think Google Me should be taken very seriously, sorry it’s just a joke. You are allowed to laugh and if you don’t find it funny that’s okay! I think I’m over rejection by now and I don’t mind standing on my own defending my silly song and mediocre singing.

As far as promoting videos if you use viewtubetrain.com enough you get featured and I’m not going to hide and say I don’t find free ways to promote my video. If you are whoring yourself on YouTube chances are you are gonna have to find ways, outside of YouTube, to promote your video. Each YouTube user has to compete with 35 hours of video that is uploaded every minute! That’s just a simple fact, so yes, you gotta share your video with everyone and yes, you gotta play the game. You also have to admit the fact that a small percentage of people will actually like your video, the more neanderthal the video is, the more the general public likes your video. So support my video of don’t, I don’t have time to sit here and convince a bunch of people to like my videos.

I JUST GOT MY FIRST TATTOO LAST NIGHT! :0)

It was great! Unicorns and I go way back to the age of 2. Watching a special movie called Legend. Then through out the ages I have found special unicorn figurines and such. But it all came together with Lady Gaga’s message and a Born This Way key chain.

For me the tattoo represents the preservation of my childhood memories and fantasies, while growing up in a world where I always felt different. It took a long time to find out who I am and what I believe in and I’m never letting go of that piece of mind. This tattoo I wear proud, not for or because of a current popular song, but rather a representation of who I truly am. No words describe me better than “BORN THIS WAY.”

I’m coming down with some sort of cold and I feel really miserable. So I will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day wearing my Disney’s Big Bad Wolf Shirt and my green boxers. I found a cute graphic I made a while back for UW-Whitewater’s Royal Purple. Check it out!
